硝石重结晶提纯
Saltpeter Purification by Recrystallization
The earliest mature inorganic chemical separation technology: exploiting the dramatic temperature-dependence of KNO₃ solubility (13.3g→246g/100g water, 0°C→100°C) vs. NaCl's near-flat curve to achieve high-purity potassium nitrate through hot dissolution → cooling recrystallization. China mastered this 2000+ years before the method appeared in Syria.
Scientific Principle
Fractional crystallization exploits differential solubility: KNO₃ solubility drops ~18.5× from boiling to freezing, while NaCl remains nearly constant (35.7→39.8g/100g). Hot dissolution saturates both salts → cooling precipitates nearly pure KNO₃ crystals while NaCl stays dissolved → filtration yields high-purity oxidizer. This is the foundational unit operation of industrial crystallization and was essential for producing gunpowder-grade saltpeter. The 13th-century Syrian engineer al-Rammah described the same method ~2000 years after Chinese records.
