How did Black Powder / Gunpowder work?

KNO₃ thermally decomposes, releasing O₂ → S and C are oxidized by O₂ → reaction heat → more KNO₃ decomposes → chain reaction → completes near-instantaneously → produces large volumes of gas (N₂, CO₂) that expand violently → explosion or propulsion.
